This linocut was created by Picasso as a poster to promote the 1964 Vallauris Exhibition.

Picasso transforms text into imagery, using playful lines and rich coloration that enhance the graphic elements of the work. Simple in concept yet bold in execution, this piece is a perfect example of Picasso’s extraordinary mastery of the linocut technique—often regarded by other artists as difficult and unwieldy. In fact, it is perhaps in his linocuts that one can best appreciate the refinement of his line and the fluidity of his hand, qualities that helped define his artistic legacy.
